A Family Corporation that’s More than a Century Old

How many companies do you know that’s a century old?  Not just in name, but one with undisrupted selling operation for at least 100 years.  In the furniture industry, there are just four of them and one, the Schewels Company, has been owned and operated without interruption all these years by the Schewels family since 1897. Today, it is managed by a team of 4th generation family members headed by Marc A. Schewel, its President and CEO, and assisted by his sister Donna and brother Elliot in the management team.

From an ambulant horse-drawn carriage that the great patriarch founder Elias Schewel used to sell small furniture items like picture frames in the Lynchburg community back in 1897, the Schewels Company has grown to operate 51 sprawling stores in the states of Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.  Each store occupies an average of 11,000 sq.ft. shop space that not only carries a line of local and imported furniture, home décor and accessories, it also has a line of home appliances and consumer electronics, making it a one-stop store to can satisfy all your home furnishing needs.  The newest stores average 44,000 to 55,000 sq.ft of mall-sizes shopping area.

Having more than a hundred years of commercial history may put the Schewels Company among the old generation companies, but one look at its stores or its website portal reveals none of the age.  There’s no doubt that its 4th generation management team has evolved the company to be in step with 21st century shopping trends.
